SESSION 4: COMPARE AND CONTRAST – WHAT TECHNOLOGY IS THE BEST MATCH? Multiple factors support the growth of different renewable energy technologies in different countries and regions. This session will try to make sense of the diversity and variety of renewable energy in the Latin American and Caribbean region, and to draw some patterns as to which technologies are advancing fastest in which parts of the region.
-
Which technologies are working best in which countries?
-
Currently, biomass and waste produce the most renewable energy, followed by small hydro power, wind power, geothermal technologies, and solar technologies. But will the situation change?
-
Brazil is the leader in renewable energy in the region. But how are different technologies evolving in Brazil?
-
What about Mexico? How much renewable energy will it use and which technologies will it favor? What about Chile and the Central American countries?
-
How is Chile's push toward non-conventional renewable energy faring?
-
Which technologies are doing best in which Caribbean countries and how are these patterns likely to evolve?

SESSION 5: CONNECTING TO THE GRID – PLUGGING INTO THE LAC REGION The improved flexibility of smart grids allows greater penetration of variable renewable energy resources such as solar power and wind power, even without the addition of energy storage. Indeed, given various fluctuations in distributed generation, such as those due to cloudy or gusty weather, smart grids are a necessity for integrating renewable energy into the grid. But which countries in Latin America and the Caribbean are investing appropriately in smart grids and how is this situation likely to evolve?
-
How can net metering allow customers to use their own generation from on-site renewable energy systems to offset their consumption?
-
How popular is net metering in the different countries in the region and how is this likely to evolve?
-
How will microgrids enable the development of renewable energy?
-
What off-grid solutions for renewable energy exist?
-
How can distributed generation help countries hit renewable energy targets?
-
Is Brazil driving smart grid development in Latin America and what are other countries doing?
-
How significant are investments being made in smart grids in the region?
